The Drill: Make a Move

An assistant with the Seattle Storm and Lakeside, Chris Bown has made his mark with individual player development. His latest column is about developing offensive moves.

Make a Move

Requirements: Each player has a ball, one basket.

This is a drill we use as a warm up drill. The players are in a line at the top of the key. The coach is at a position just below the free throw line. The player dribbles toward the coach and makes a move to get herself open for a shot (If she is going to her right she will use her left foot as the plant foot and the right foot as the brake foot or she can execute a two-foot stop). Players can either execute a between-the-legs move, a crossover move, an inside-out move, or a combo of inside-out and between-the-legs, inside-out and crossover, or hesitation dribble and crossover. This alows for a 7-8-foot jump shot.

Note: Philosophically, I like to teach our players to hesitate in some manner before executing their move. This is a ploy to freeze the defense.

Alternatives:
1. The players are in a line at or about the bottom of the center court circle on the same end of the floor as the coach who is now at the top of the key. This allows for a 15-foot jumper.

2. Players and coach move to a wing area. This allows the player to work on their catch and attack from the fastbreak.
