1-2-Down-Thru

The purpose of this drill is to help players gain confidence in entering the ball into the post player while being defended.

Groups of three players at each basket. One ball per group of three. Coach is supervising from the center of the floor.

One player in the group starts with the ball on the wing below the free throw line extended. The second player is defending this player and the third player is shaped up in the post position straddling the first line above the block.

The player with the ball puts the ball above her head and fakes (“1-2”) an overhead pass to the post player. Her goal is to get the defender to raise her hands. The defender is mirroring the basketball. The offensive player now lowers the ball below the defenders waist (“Down”) to try and send a step-through wraparound bounce pass to the post player and get the defender to drop her hands. If the defender does drop her hands the passer makes a push pass (“Thru”) over the defender's upper arm.

The passer now follows her pass and defends against the player who was in the post and the first defender becomes the receiver. The drill continues in this fashion.

Chris Bown is an assistant coach with the Lakeside girls varsity basketball team and a coach of the Northwest HoopGurlz select girls team.
