A former assistant with the Seattle Storm and now defending state 3A champion Lakeside and NW HoopGurlz, Chris Bown has made his mark with individual player development. His latest The Drill column is about a drill for postup moves.

Solo Postup

Requirements: Three to four players, two coaches, two balls.

Player 1 steps onto the court under the basket with a ball. Coach is on the perimeter, 15-18 feet away from the basket. Player tosses the ball off the glass and outlets to the coach. Player takes a series of "crow hops" to shape up in the post for the return pass from the coach. After player makes the first shot, she rebounds and passes to the coach on the other side of the floor and comes to the ball in the same fashion.

Alternatives:
1) Vary the post move the player executes.
2) Have coach drive middle, with post moving to the short corner
3) Have coach drive baseline, with post moving up the lane.
4) Have post step out and execute a side-on ball screen (high side and low side) and step out for the jumper or slip the screen.
5) Have player pass and shape up at the high post.
6) Add Defense (coach plays to help the offensive player "read the defense").

Chris Bown is an assistant coach with the Lakeside girls varsity basketball team and a coach of the Northwest HoopGurlz select girls team.
