A former assistant with the Seattle Storm and now defending state 3A champion Lakeside and NW HoopGurlz, Chris Bown has made his mark with individual player development. His latest The Drill column is about a drill to develop footwork and shooting.

Toss Out

Note: This is a drill that I watched Dwight Daub. the Strength and Conditioning coach for the Seattle Sonics, use with some of their players.

Requirements: One coach, one player and 1-2 balls.

Coach stands under the basket. The player starts in the key. The coach tosses the ball out to an area on the floor (the ball can be tossed anywhere from 7-20 feet depending on the shot you want the player to work on). The player sprints to the ball, catches with a two-foot stop and pivots into a jump shot. Once the player shoots, she follows his shot. If the shot is made, she hands the ball to the coach. If the shot is a miss, she follows and puts it back in. Coach may provide a bit of pressure on the follow-up shot.

Variations:
1. Have player catch and shoot.
2. Have player one dribble and shoot.
3. Have coach follow to set a screen for the shot.
4. Have player sprint to the ball, pass to the coach who has moved to the wing and v-cut for the return pass for the jumper.
5. Have player pivot one way and cross overinto a jump shot the other direction.
6. Have player pivot and then execute a go move on the same foot.
