A former assistant with the Seattle Storm and now defending state 3A champion Lakeside and NW HoopGurlz, Chris Bown has made his mark with individual player development. His latest The Drill column is about a drill to help post players finish against defense.

Power Lay Up Drill

Note: This is a drill that I use to help post players develop a feel for putting up a shot in the paint against tough post defense and a possible double team.

Requirements:
Three players, one ball at one basket.

Player 1 (offensive player) starts at the free-throw line. The two defensive players start in the paint, under the basket, defending the basket. The ball is placed on the floor in the paint. The offensive player jogs to the key to pick up the basketball. She “sits” to pick up the ball. Once she chins the basketball, the defenders chest up to her and she tries to score. When she “finishes” the shot, the defender grabs the rebound and the shooter goes back to the free-throw line to begin again. Shooter completes five reps, then all players switch roles.

Variations:
1. Coach can shoot the ball from one side, so the player gets a weakside rebound.
2. Coach can pass into the low post and have the second player double “down” or help from the weakside.

Chris Bown is an assistant coach with the Lakeside girls varsity basketball team and a coach of the Northwest HoopGurlz select girls team.
