Chris Bown
A former assistant with the Seattle Storm and now Lakeside and NW HoopGurlz, Chris Bown has made his mark with individual player development. His latest The Drill column is about a drill that works on setting screens and shooting off screens. | |||
Two-Player Screening Drill Required: 6-8 players, 2 coaches (passers) and 4-5 balls. Passer (P1) at the top of the key initiates the drill with a pass to the coach on the wing. She steps toward her pass then cuts away to her teammate on the wing. On the pass the wing player (P2) will walk two steps toward the baseline/basket to set her player up for the screen. P1 runs over and executes a two-foot stop to set her screen for P2. After setting her screen, P1 comes off for the jump shot. Coaches will pass the ball to each player for the shot. Variation: P1 can slip the screen or pop after P1 comes off the screen. P2 can curl fade or catch and shoot. Chris Bown is the head coach with the Lakeside girls' varsity basketball team and a coach of the Northwest HoopGurlz select girls team. He recently was an assistant coach in charge of player development for the WNBA Seattle Storm. Chris also does individual training and can be reached at 206-794-9046 or cbown03@yahoo.com. A graduate of the University of Washington, he has been the head coach for girls varsity basketball teams at Holy Names Academy, Seattle Academy and American Indian Heritage School. This is his second stint at Lakeside as an assistant to Sandy Schneider. Chris also has been a math and physical education instructor at St. Paul School and Seattle Academy.
